Academic DSA in 2026: What Changed for Math and Science — and What a Family Starting Now Should Know

The academic DSA routes for Math and Science moved more than most families realise this year — some of the best-known schools changed which ones they offer between 2025 and 2026. An NUS High alumnus who now coaches for these applications walks through what changed, why schools no longer test the same way, and the one question a family should ask before building a portfolio.

Most of the DSA conversation happens around talents you can watch — a swimmer, a violinist, a debater. The academic routes are quieter, and easy to misread as the most stable of the lot: surely a strong Math or Science child just keeps building, and the door stays where it is.

This year that assumption did not hold. Between 2025 and 2026, some of the best-known schools quietly changed which academic talent areas they offer at all — and the way they select is not standard from one school to the next. For a family whose child is genuinely strong in Math or Science and only now starting to think about DSA, that changes what "getting ready" should even mean.

So we asked someone who sits at the unusual intersection of having done it and now coaching it. Chee Wei Jie teaches for academic DSA at Eclat Institute. He is himself an NUS High School alumnus who went on to read Physics at Imperial College London and Part III Mathematics at Cambridge. His read on this cycle was less about tactics than about not building on ground that keeps moving.

The academic DSA map just moved

Start with the change most families missed, because it happened at the level of which routes exist — not how hard they are to get.

"The clearest 2026 change was that some schools revised their academic DSA routes. NYGH offered Mathematics and Science DSA in 2025 but removed both in 2026. MGS introduced Computational Thinking Skills in 2026 and said it will phase out its English Language and STEM routes after this exercise."

Sit with what that means for planning. A family that spent Primary 3 to Primary 5 building specifically toward Nanyang Girls' High's Mathematics or Science route would have arrived in 2026 to find the route gone. A family building toward MGS's English Language or STEM routes now knows those are being retired after this exercise. Neither change was a secret — both are stated on the schools' own DSA pages — but neither is something you would catch unless you re-checked every year.

His conclusion is the practical spine of this whole piece:

"Our view is that academic DSA is becoming more school-specific. A parent should not spend years building a child's portfolio on the assumption that one school will retain the same talent area. Check each school's options every year and keep PSLE preparation as the main academic route."

That last clause is the one to underline. The academic DSA route is a second door, not a replacement for the first. The theme across all three: nothing here is fixed enough to bet a childhood of preparation on.

There is no "standard DSA Math paper"

The second surprise is that even where an academic route exists, schools do not assess it the same way. Parents often ask how to prepare for "the DSA Math test," as if there were one. There isn't.

"Selection also differs between schools. NUS High required every applicant to take both Mathematics and Science tests before inviting shortlisted applicants to a selection camp. Hwa Chong publishes an interview and selection-test stage, while RI does not publish one standard test format. Preparing for a supposed standard DSA Maths paper may not be the optimal approach."

Hwa Chong publishes an interview-and-selection-test stage. Raffles does not publish a single standard format at all — it states plainly that it will not disclose details of the selection process. A child drilled narrowly for one imagined paper is preparing for a test that may not be the one they sit.

The more durable preparation, on this reading, is depth in the actual subjects and genuine problem-solving ability — the things that travel across whatever format a given school uses — rather than pattern-matching to a paper that may not exist.

If your child really is strong in Math and Science

Here Chee Wei Jie was direct, and it's worth taking seriously precisely because he came through the school he's recommending:

"For a child with a sustained interest in Mathematics and Science, we strongly recommend considering NUS High School. Its six-year programme is centred on deeper Mathematics and Science study, and every Year 1 applicant is tested in both subjects."

But he immediately guarded against the obvious misread — that "strong at Math" means "send them to the Math school and stop thinking":

"NUS High School also offers Humanities, languages, performing arts, sports and other CCAs. However, Mathematics and Science remain central to the programme. If the child may prefer a stronger platform in languages, humanities, music or competitive sport, compare the actual subject depth, timetable and CCA opportunities at other schools before deciding."

The word doing the work is sustained. A child who lights up at a hard problem and keeps going is a different case from a child who is simply good at Math among other things they love more. For the first, a six-year programme built around Math and Science is a gift. For the second, it can be a narrowing — and the honest move is to compare timetables and subject depth across schools before committing, not to let a single strength decide the whole shape of secondary school.

The part most families forget: the workload after the offer

This was the observation that gave the interview its weight, because it came from watching what happens after admission — the part no application guide shows you. Eclat does not teach Primary 6, so Chee Wei Jie was clear he had no 2026 applicant results to report. What he had instead was more useful:

"Among the Secondary 1 students we teach, a few entered their schools through Track and Field DSA. Some had lower academic grades during the National School Games season, when training and competitions were most demanding. Their grades improved again toward the end of the year."

His takeaway generalises well beyond sport:

"This is a useful reminder that a parent and child should consider the workload after admission, not only the chance of securing a place."

For an academic DSA family the warning lands even harder. Winning a place in a programme built around deeper Math and Science is not the finish line — it's the start of carrying that depth for six years. The question isn't only "can my child get in," it's "will my child thrive once the intensity is the everyday, not the audition."

What it comes down to

Ask Chee Wei Jie for the one thing he'd tell a family, and it isn't a tactic. It's a test of motive:

"DSA is a commitment to the school and its programme, not simply a way to secure a place. The child should choose a school they would still want without the admission advantage."

That single sentence quietly resolves most of the anxiety around academic DSA. If your child would still choose that school without the DSA shortcut — for its programme, its depth, its community — then the application is worth doing, and any result is survivable. If the only reason to go is that DSA is the way in, the plan is fragile no matter how strong the portfolio.

What this means for you

  1. Re-check every school's academic routes every year. NYGH dropped Math and Science for 2026; MGS is retiring English Language and STEM after this cycle. What was true when your child was in Primary 3 may not be true when they apply. Bet on your child's development, not on a specific school keeping a specific door open.
  2. Keep PSLE preparation as the main academic route. Academic DSA is a second door, not a substitute. Treat it that way and a closed route costs you nothing.
  3. Don't prepare for a "standard DSA Math paper" — it isn't standard. NUS High has all applicants sit selection tests before shortlisting for a camp; Hwa Chong runs an interview and/or selection test; RI publishes no single format at all. Build real subject depth and problem-solving ability, which carry across formats.
  4. If the interest is genuine and sustained, look hard at NUS High — but compare honestly. A six-year Math- and Science-centred programme is a gift for the right child and a narrowing for the wrong one. Compare subject depth, timetable and CCAs across schools before deciding.
  5. Plan for the workload after the offer, not just the offer. The place is the beginning of the commitment, not the end of it. Choose a school your child would still want even without the admission advantage.
