7 Schools, One Day: Key Takeaways from Singapore's 23 May 2026 DSA Open Houses
Couldn't make it on 23 May? Here's everything that actually matters from HCI, RGS, Victoria School, SJI, Dunman High, St. Anthony's Canossian, and Crest — distilled into what helps you decide whether to apply.
Seven secondary schools held DSA open houses on 23 May 2026. If you were there, you got brochures, a principal's welcome address, and maybe a CCA showcase. If you weren't, this post covers what actually matters for deciding whether to apply.
Here's the full picture — school by school, then the patterns worth noticing across all seven.

Hwa Chong Institution — 22 DSA talent areas, potential over results
HCI is an all-boys SAP school on the 6-year IP track. Every student takes Higher Chinese — that's non-negotiable as a SAP school.
The standout message from HCI's open house: potential matters more than past results. They explicitly say prior experience is not required. That's meaningful for a school with 22 DSA talent areas spanning STEM, Chinese culture, performing arts, and 13 sports — one of the widest DSA menus in Singapore.
The caveat: "no prior experience needed" doesn't mean "anyone can get in." It means they're open to students who show genuine capacity and curiosity, even without a competition trophy list. The 6-year IP commitment is binding — students bypass O-Levels entirely.
Who fits: Boys strong in Chinese, self-directed learners, students who want the broadest DSA menu in Singapore without a fixed achievement floor.
Raffles Girls' School — Four language DSAs, and one of Singapore's rarest sports
RGS is Singapore's most prestigious all-girls school, and its DSA menu reflects that range: 18 talent areas including four separate language tracks (English, Chinese, Malay, Tamil — each requiring three writing samples), a Music Elective Programme (MEP) with a performance video requirement, and Science DSA that feeds into a structured 4-year research programme.
The detail most parents miss: Rhythmic Gymnastics is one of the rarest DSA sports in Singapore. If your daughter trains in it, RGS is one of very few schools where that talent opens a DSA door.
Who fits: High-achieving girls wanting Singapore's top all-girls IP path, students with strong language portfolios, or those in MEP, research science, or niche sports.
Victoria School — IP or O-Level, your choice at application
VS is one of Singapore's oldest boys' schools (founded 1876), and its DSA has an unusual feature: you declare upfront whether you want the 6-year Victoria-Cedar Alliance IP (leading to Victoria JC) or the standard 4-year O-Level track. That choice is made at the point of DSA application — not later.
VS also offers the Art Elective Programme (AEP) as a DSA area, which is rare among government boys' schools. STEM and Leadership here are academic and character pathways, not sports categories.
Who fits: Boys in the East who want a heritage school with genuine flexibility on track, or those with AEP talent who prefer a boys' school environment.
St. Joseph's Institution — Three STEM tracks, each requiring a portfolio
SJI's DSA has a structure that catches many families off guard. STEM isn't one category — it's three distinct areas: Coding, Robotics, and Programming & 3D Modelling. Each requires a separate portfolio submission. Visual Arts also requires a portfolio.
For sports: trials are held on 11 or 18 July 2026. International Chess and Sailing applicants are exempt from trials. All shortlisted candidates — regardless of domain — attend in-person interviews between 15 July and 5 August 2026.
The track choice (IB Diploma IP or O-Level SEC) is also made at application. No switching later.
Who fits: Boys with a clear STEM sub-specialisation (not just general "coding interest"), Catholic mission school families, or those with rare sports like Rugby, Sailing, or International Chess.
Dunman High School — Singapore's only co-ed SAP IP school
Dunman High held its 2026 open house entirely online. The school's defining characteristic: it is Singapore's only co-educational SAP school on the IP track. Boys and girls, bilingual throughout, 6-year programme, one of 11 SAP secondary schools in the country.
Its 18 DSA talent areas include some less common options: STEAM (where the A is for Aesthetics), String Ensemble, and Sailing alongside Wushu and Softball. Chinese Dance and Modern Dance are open to girls; most other areas are open to both genders.
Who fits: Bilingual families who want co-ed IP, students interested in MEP or arts-integrated STEAM, or those who want a less pressurised alternative to RGS or HCI while still on a 6-year IP path.
St. Anthony's Canossian Secondary — Performing arts specialisms you won't find elsewhere
SACSS is a government-aided all-girls Catholic O-Level school in Bedok North. Its 2026 open house ran online for one hour. What stands out is its performing arts DSA menu: Angklung/Kulintang Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble, and Indian Dance are among the rarest DSA areas in any Singapore secondary school.
If your daughter plays guitar seriously, or trains in Indian dance, SACSS may be one of very few schools in Singapore where that talent actually counts as a DSA application.
Who fits: Girls in the East seeking a nurturing, faith-based O-Level environment — and students with niche performing arts talent that most schools don't even list.
Crest Secondary — One DSA area. Football only.
Crest is different from every other school on this list. It offers exactly one DSA talent area: Football, via a School Football Academy in partnership with Unleash The Roar! (UTR). UTR is Singapore's professional football development pathway — the coaching, nutrition, and mental resilience training at Crest is structured well above typical CCA level.
This is not a "we have a football team" school. It is a school where serious football development is the entire programme.
Who fits: Boys whose primary ambition is football and who want a structured, professionally supported pathway within a school environment.
Three Patterns Across All Seven Schools
1. "No prior experience required" is common — but misleading if taken literally.
HCI and SJI both say it. What they mean is that they don't have a stated minimum. What they don't say is that the actual applicant pool in competitive talent areas almost always includes students with competition results. The statement is more reassuring than it is a guide to competitiveness.
2. Portfolio requirements are rising.
SJI requires portfolios for three STEM sub-areas and Visual Arts. RGS requires writing samples for all four language tracks and a performance video for MEP. If you are applying to a school with portfolio requirements, starting to compile now — with the application window closing 2 June — is not optional.
3. IP vs O-Level track must be declared at application for VS and SJI.
This surprises families who assume they can decide later. At both schools, the track declaration is part of the DSA application itself. There is no switching after acceptance.
The Application Window Closes in 9 Days
The MOE DSA-Sec 2026 application window opened on 6 May and closes on 2 June 2026 at 4:30pm SGT. There is no extension.
If you attended any of these open houses — or are now seriously considering applying based on what you've read — the next step is submitting through the MOE DSA-Sec Portal. There is no cap on the number of schools you can apply to. Most families apply to three to six.
If you want to track every step of the process from application to preference submission in October, we've put together a step-by-step checklist that saves your progress each time you return:

The next round of open houses is 30 May 2026, with Cedar Girls' Secondary, School of Science and Technology, and Yusof Ishak Secondary. Takeaways will be up the same day.
